Set right at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, Herceg Novi is a town of sun and stairways, of mimosa scent and lush greenery brought from every corner of the world. From old fortresses and stone lanes to hidden beaches and boat trips, here is how to make the most of every day on the Boka coast, unhurried and at your own pace.
Heart of the town
Herceg Novi reveals itself best on foot. The Old Town is a tangle of narrow stone streets and stairways descending to the sea, with small squares, old churches and the Clock Tower, the town's emblem and the gateway into the heart of the settlement. Wander without rushing: around every corner waits a view of the bay, a stone archway or a courtyard full of flowers and palms.
Two fortresses watch over the town. Forte Mare has guarded the approach from the sea since the town was founded, while Kanli Kula, a former Ottoman stronghold, offers one of the finest views over the whole of Boka. Climb up before sunset, bring water and wait for the lights to come on slowly along the coast and reflect in the calm sea.
Not far from the centre, in the shade of tall cypresses, hides Savina Monastery, one of the most important spiritual sites on the Montenegrin coast. Its quiet courtyard and view of the sea are worth the short walk, while the town hosts events throughout the year: the best known is the Mimosa Festival, when in winter the streets fill with the scent of yellow blossom and the town comes alive with music and cheer.
Sea and shore
Pet Danica is a long seaside promenade linking Herceg Novi with Igalo and Meljine, always in touch with the sea. This is where the town's summer life unfolds: a morning swim, coffee in the shade, ice cream and evening strolls to the sound of the waves. Igalo is widely known for its healing sea mud and warm mineral springs, so a day given over to rest and relaxation pairs easily with a swim.
For those seeking clearer, quieter water, a boat from the town harbour leads to the loveliest beaches and coves right at the mouth of the bay. The ride is short and the reward is clear water, the shade of pines and olives and the feeling of having escaped the crowds. Bring a towel, sunscreen and good cheer, the rest takes care of itself.
Boka Kotorska is only a few short drives away, and every town in the bay tells its own story. The bay is often compared to a fjord: high mountains drop almost to the water, and the road winds past stone villages and little churches. Rent a car or set off by boat and see the finest of it in a single day, with a lunch break by the sea.
